Magical Gateways

Earlier

Hyntra slashed at a falling leaf with her claws. Outside the shield’s golden glow, snow fell, but no snow passed through the shield to the area beneath it. The trees surrounding this magical haven leaned away from it as if they were afraid to touch it. And they should be. This place wasn’t natural, but she was only here because the spell to bring back their leader required the caster to stand in a place of magic. So here she was, stuck in this magical place until they resurrected their previous leader. Once he was back, she would be free to do as she wished.

The trees within the shield’s bright dome remained green and growing, and a strange warmth pervaded the place in sharp contrast to the windy cold outside it. But Hyntra couldn’t locate its source. I guess that’s one benefit of a Haven. Magic controlled the haven’s climate, unlike the weather outside this protected valley. Why am I thinking about this? I don’t care about the weather. She just moved through it toward her goal, but it never stopped her.

Hyntra glared at the drawing of the spell circle her people were supposed to be constructing, but half the symbols were still missing. “Why does everything have to be so damned complicated?”

She wanted to rip the drawing into itty-bitty pieces, but she retracted her claws instead because she needed that damned thing still. All we should need is a simple incantation and a mage to return our leader to us. But no, someone had turned this into a damned ritual with all kinds of unnecessary things, and she wanted to scream. Why’s nothing ever easy?

“Why isn’t this done yet?” Hyntra pointed to a section of the drawing and tried not to stab it. She needed instructions to bring back their leader. He’d better take over immediately so I can hunt. Maybe she’d help him track down the fools who’d imprisoned him after she’d hunter her fill. He could wait a few years for revenge.

“Because it’s complicated. I have to measure every angle, and that one is off.” Reshi stabbed the offending spot with a claw, then rubbed it out. “You don’t have to watch. I want this to work as badly as you do.”

“Are you trying to get rid of me?” Hyntra rose from the boulder she sat on and stretched. Her chain-mail shirt shined in the gold light of the shield.

“Yes, why haven’t you left yet? Go get the last child while I figure out how to draw these circle runes correctly. I’ll finish them a lot faster without you breathing down my neck.” Reshi glared at her over her shoulder. The goat-woman was too forward for her own good. She stalked over and grabbed the instructions.

Hyntra let them go without a fight because she needed this spell to work. But after it did, then all bets were off. I’ll cut her down to size. Hyntra opened and closed her claws until a flash of violet light caught her eye.
